Add interest to kitchen cupboards
The kitchen is the heart of any home. It’s where we pour our breakfast cereal, feed the cats, and gather at the end of a long day. It’s where friends sit on the stools at the island, and beers are poured before the big game. The appearance of your kitchen is huge, and painting or refacing cabinets and updating the hardware can provide a fresh look for a fraction of the cost it would take to completely replace them. Dual tone cabinets are on trend right now, and add dimension and extra interest to the space.
Coordinate the bathroom
Update the hardware in your bathroom(s). This can be anything from replacing towel rods with hooks, upgrading the existing towel rods, making sure the fixtures coordinate, and replacing that unsightly plastic or rusted metal shower rod. While you’re at it, replace your ratty old bath rug and drape a few plush towels (neatly!) on the new fixtures.
Paint those scuffed walls
Does your home have that lived-in feel? Great for you, not so great for prospective buyers. Give the high-traffic areas a fresh coat of paint. Neutrals are always best for appealing to a variety of buyers. They can always add a splash of colour later. For now, you just want the space to appear fresh and flawless. If you don’t have the time to DIY, there are many local reputable painting companies who will patch, clean, and paint your walls for a reasonable price.
Tighten things up
Wobbly knobs on your closer doors? Loose kitchen faucet? Crooked light switches? Get out your trusty screwdriver and spend an hour or so scanning potential problem areas around the house. Potential buyers notice these little flaws, and they do have an impact on their impression of the home.
Lighten it up
If you can swing it, look into replacing a few key light fixtures around the house. It’s amazing what an updated fixture can do for a space. In the master bedroom try a replacing the bland, frosted glass flush mount fixture with a semi-flush mount or small chandelier style fixture. At the very least, replace the traditional bulbs with LED’s. These add a considerable amount of brightness to a room and the brighter your home, the more welcoming it feels.
Of course, the best thing you can do is give the whole house a good clean. Get down deep and wipe those baseboards, wash the blinds, make the mirrors sparkle, and hit all those hidden areas that gather dirt and grime over the years.
